Angelwings

Aftermath, Part One is the eighteenth issue of the Angel comic book series. Written by Kelley Armstrong and illustrated by Dave Ross, it was originally published on February 25, 2009, by IDW Publishing.

Synopsis[]

Two weeks after the finale of "After the Fall," novelist Kelley Armstrong (The Summoning) comes aboard to explore the many repercussions following the explosive Angel 17. Artist Dave Ross also comes aboard to present the first chapter of "Aftermath," wherein we learn who lived, who died, and who will be forever changed from the experience.[1]

Summary[]

Demon Lords have a bounty on Angel's head, he fights each demon and vampire that comes after him. He talks to them about feeling he is not making a difference anymore, and he concludes he should do the same he did when he first arrived in Los Angeles. A man stops Angel to take a picture with him, calling him "the hero of L.A."

Angel stops by Connor's to invite him to his new team. Connor is happy for him and says he can watch Angel's back now and then, but Connor needs to find a job of his own, without Angel's help. Meanwhile, Connor avoids Gwen, who have found his new phone number and has been calling him. Connor asks who else is in Angel's team, but Gunn is out with Illyria to find himself, he doesn't know about Spike, and Lorne is putting his life back together.

As Angel leaves, three assassins attack him, but Kate comes to his help. She says she heard he's reopening Angel Investigations and wants to join in. She already has the idea of setting up the base for "the Guardian of L.A." in an old church for sale. Later, they set up newspaper ads and business cards. Kate tells Angel she missed helping people after leaving the force, and she's not complaining about "kicking some more demon butt." Angel questions her use of "more," but she changes the topic.

Outside the church, Kate has set up a press release, and a large group of journalists and fans expect Angel. Despite his surprise, Kate notes Angel is already a success but they might need a screening process. One of the cases is already a bogus excuse for a fan to meet Angel and get his autograph. Another is a trap for assassins to get Angel.

Back in their church, Angel and Kate find a man and a women introducing themselves as from the city council, members of a new committee to handle the apocalyptic fallout. Kate notes Angel already averted the apocalypse, but they say that much magic must have a fallout. Angel asks what do they know about magic, but the duo reveal the city didn't hire them knowingly. They say Angel made "a big mess" and they would like him to clean up. They disappear in a flash of light.

Angel and Kate continue going to bogus cases, such as a novelist wanting to tell Angel's story, a photographer asking for Angel to take off his shirt, a group of women running and screaming after Angel, a group passing money as they watch Angel and Kate fight a gigantic demon, and an attempt to film them fight a man wearing a demon costume. Kate says she continues doing a screen process, but these cases keep slipping through. Angel suggest they close the agency, but Kate says Connor came by yesterday wanting his help.

A woman recognizes Angel and asks for his help. She says an inhuman creature has been chasing her the whole night, but Angel does not believe her. Kate stays behind and fights off the attacker, but Angel sees the large man is human. The police arrives and arrests the man. Kate thinks it's strange how strong the man was, but Angel says she doesn't need to play it up for his sake. He tells her it's not working and she will only get hurt with the horde of assassins after him.

Connor meets Angel and Kate and offers his help part-time. The city council duo materialize in front of them and offer Angel a job in the government. Angel denies, but they tell Kate and Connor the man Kate fought was under the effect of the magic fallout they mentioned before. A panther watches hidden in the vents.

Kate says they were about to close the agency because of the crowd of fans outside and following them. The duo assign an office to guard their door and a restraining order against interfering with Angel and his work. Angel questions what work they want him to do, and the duo explains he simply has to bring the victims of the fallout to St. Luke Hospital. Connor is suspicious, but Angel leaves them to discuss details with Kate.

As Angel lays down to sleep, the panther sneaks into his room and transforms into a woman. She goes to him and holds a stake at his back.

Continuity[]

  • Connor avoids Gwen's calls; they had a relationship during the Fall (After the Fall, Part Eleven) and broke up when she betrayed Team Angel (Part Twelve), but she ultimately sacrificed herself to save Connor (Part Thirteen).
  • Gunn drives off in a car with Illyria, leading up to the events in Only Human.
  • Kate and Angel reunited after last seeing each other in "Epiphany."
  • Angel doesn't understand when Kate mentions the advantage of killing "more" demons, not knowing she was a demon hunter during the Fall (After the Fall, Part Seven).
  • Angel mentions wanting a Viper when the man sarcastically offers him a car, the same choice he made as CEO of Wolfram & Hart ("Just Rewards").

Demon: "That prophecy I heard says you will help out. On our side."
Angel: "Don't remind me."
Angel: "Even after a month of normalcy, everything remains changed. No more hiding in the shadows. No more hiding what I am. Back to the beginning. Back to when I used to do some good."
Connor: "There's another team? Is that a good… I mean… If you need someone to watch your back now and then, I'm there, but I really need to find a job on my own, make some money, get a better place."
Angel: "I could help with that."
Connor: "I'd rather you didn't."
Angel: "Kate?"
Kate: "Been a while, huh?"
Angel: "It has. You look—"
