While created as part of licensed material, the novel series The Lost Slayer takes place in an alternate universe, and as such is not part of the "real" Buffyverse.
She was the successor to the Slayer Faith, since Faith had been killed a few months before Buffy's arrival in this alternate timeline. August was captured by the forces of the Vampire King, Rupert Giles, shortly after Buffy's arrival in the future. Always troubled by the stress and responsibility of her role as the Slayer, August refused to listen to Buffy's appeals for patience and waiting for a chance to escape in favour of fighting Buffy so that one of them would die and a new Slayer would be Called. During the subsequent fight, Buffy was forced to break August's neck, but was able to use the fight to create the impression that August had slit her throat, allowing her to catch the guards by surprise and escape herself.
August's successor was Anna, who was apparently a friend of hers, with Anna initially blaming Buffy for August's death until Willow Rosenberg helped her recall August's own troubles with her role as the Slayer.
