It's been a hundred years since my enemy crippled me. Now, ultimate power is within his grasp, and I shall not let it be. Forget about honor, forget about everything but getting my amulet; bring the Watchers to me, find the Slayers, and kill them. Kill everything that gets in your way. Go! Go!
―Balthazar[src]

Balthazar was a demon served by El Eliminati and an old enemy of Richard Wilkins.[1]

Biography[]

Lord Balthazar was a powerful demon served by El Eliminati, a dueling vampire cult ruled by codes of honor. Balthazar traveled to Sunnydale, where he fought Richard Wilkins for the control of the town. Balthazar was defeated and his amulet, the source of his great powers, was taken by a landowner called Gleaves. Crippled and defeated, Balthazar was driven underground and was believed dead for the following hundred years.[1]

In 1999, upon learning of his enemy's impending Ascension, Balthazar sent El Eliminati to retrieve his amulet, which would allow him to recuperate his powers. His minions came into conflict with the Slayers Buffy and Faith, who took the amulet. Enraged, Balthazar sent Vincent to assassinate Wilkins, but the vampire failed. He also sent other members of the Eliminati to kidnap the Watchers Giles and Wesley, whom he intended to torture into revealing the location of his amulet.[1]

To rescue Giles and Wesley, Buffy and Angel fought Balthazar's minions. The demon tried to kill Angel by smashing his head, but Buffy electrocuted him in time. Before expiring, a severely burned Balthazar taunted them with the upcoming arise of his enemy Wilkins, which would cause great suffering and devastation.[1]

Appearance[]

Balthazar had the appearance of an obese demon, unable to move and forced into a tank of liquid, where he was constantly kept moist by one of his minions. He had short stubby arms, sharp nails and teeth, and red eyes.[1]

Powers and abilities[]

The extent of Balthazar's powers while in possession of his amulet is unknown. His only remaining power that was demonstrated was being able to pull one of the El Eliminati towards him, meaning he had some form of telekinesis. He also snapped the vampires neck with his arms, meaning, despite his limited mobility, Balthazar still had a significant degree of strength.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

  • He was portrayed by Christian Clemenson.
  • As the episode came out a year after the 1998 movie Blade, it is likely that that design of Balthazar was based on the character Pearl, as both are pit-ridden, extremely obese, and only able to move their arms.
