Baron Samedi was the guardian of cemeteries.
During a routine patrol, Buffy Summers saved a girl from a vampire attack. The girl, Verona, actually wanted to be sired by the vampire, and sought revenge against Buffy for ruining her chance at immortality. Verona summoned Samedi, promising him Buffy's soul in exchange for immortality. Samedi summoned maggots in Buffy's backpack and rats in the kitchen of Buffy's college. Trying to get to the bottom of who was trying to gross her out, Buffy headed to the cemetery again where she was attacked and rendered unconscious by an army of zombies. Buffy was nearly sacrificed, but was saved by the timely intervention of Spike. Disappointed in Verona, Samedi took her soul as payment instead and left.
