"Broken Bottle of Djinn" was comic book one-shot issue in the Tales of the Slayers meta-series.
Synopsis
At Sunnydale High School, Principal Snyder was having some new lockers installed. While being carried inside, the door of one of these opened and a bottle fell out. From the opened bottle escape a Djinn, which started speaking in an unknown language and wreaking havoc upon the school.
In a nearby classroom, Buffy and Willow were doing chemistry experiments, when they heard the Djinn approaching. Buffy confronted it with a crossbow. After shooting it to distract it, Willow used magic to open a temporal portal through which it ran away.
In New York City, in 1937, during the Great Depression, a blind girl, Rachel O'Connor, was trying to sell pencils on the street. A man approached her saying she could make more money if she went into an alley with him. After having lured the woman with him under the false pretence of prostitution, the man revealed himself to be a vampire. The woman revealed she was neither blind, nor a regular girl, but instead she was the Slayer and after a short scuffle she staked him. Just at that moment, two men in dark trenchcoats claiming to be from the O.S.S. approached her and told her to get into their car.
They took her to a luxurious mansion, where a man explained the government needed her help impersonating a Nazi collaborator, Major Deitrich, so as to intercept a supernatural artefact the Nazis were shipping through the US. She was given a make-over in order to appear more like the person she was impersonating.
Later Rachel went to a train station to meet her target, Colonel Karl Mueller. He spotted through her disguise though, because she chewed bubblegum and ran away, shooting a train conductor on his flight. Eventually, Rachel caught up with him and defeated him in a fight, but not before Mueller opened the bottle he was carrying in his suitcase, releasing a Djinn. Unable to fight it, Rachel ran away. The Djinn followed her and when she suddenly stopped, its forward momentum drove it back into the bottle, which she closed off using the gum she had been chewing. She put the bottle in a locker and kept the key, so that it would never come out again (until 1997, when Snyder acquired the lockers).
Continuity
The story was set after "Ted", but before "Bad Eggs". The flashback portion of the story was set after "Spike vs. Dracula, Part Two", but before "Sonneblume".
- Willow opened a temporal portal through which the Djinn escaped; she did not open any temporal portals again until years later and until she was much stronger in magic, when she sent Buffy to the future in "Time of Your Life, Part One".
- It is unknown what happened to the Djinn after it went through the temporal portal.
