- “Death to all vampires! Destroy all demons! No soul, no life!”
- ―Camazotz[src]
Camazotz was a creature in the universe without shrimp[1] whose purpose was to protect the Slayer and destroy vampires, demons, and other soulless creatures. He had the appearance of a red bat and was taller than a human.[2]
Biography[]
Anyanka acquired a jar containing Camazotz from the Watchers Council sometime in the year 500 BCE. According to her, he was supposed to be asleep for thousands of years until needed.[2]
In 2019, while Drusilla destroyed various items in Anya's magic shop, she broke the jar and accidentally freed Camazotz.[3] He escaped the shop through the roof, breaking it with his wings, and flew around Sunnydale looking for demons and vampires to destroy. The Slayer, Buffy Summers, followed him in order to prevent Camazotz from hurting humans in the process, and fought him as he had begun began to destroy an area full of people.[2]
Camazotz was confused why the Slayer hurt him, and Buffy listened as he told his name, explained that he always helped the Slayer, and described his sole purposed as to protect the Slayer and kill vampires. Astounded, Buffy compared Camazotz to a Pegasus of her own. Rupert Giles, using a charm Willow Rosenberg had brought him, then asked the great Camazotz to sleep once again, as it was not his time yet. Camazotz recognized Giles as a Watcher and thanked him, who in turned said it was a honor to meet him.[2]
For Halloween, Buffy dressed as a bat, although the presence of a tail caused confusion among those who tried to guess her costume, which she based on "her Pegasus."[4]
When the Hellmother's power grew over the male population of Sunnydale, Jennifer Calendar freed Camazotz and flew with him to rescue the Scoobies in the Tunaverse from the hive mind army.[5] Willow, Kendra, Cordelia, Rose, and Anyanka then rode Camazotz into the hellmouth, where they helped Buffy in the battle to defeat the Hellmother.[6]
Behind the scenes[]
- In Mayan mythology, Camazotz is a bat god, associated with night, death, and sacrifice. The name means "death bat" in the K'iche' language.
- In the non-canon novel series The Lost Slayer, Camazotz is an Old One and a higher being offspring, creator of the vampire infestation on Earth.
