Carl was a vampire pack leader in Sunnydale.
He confidently told Spike that he and his pack were "rebels". One of the rules was that vampires and other supernatural creatures usually took the night off on Halloween. Carl and his pack, including two vampires, Zack and Justin, didn't believe in following that rule. Spike, unimpressed, replied that he himself was a rebel. Before Carl could verbally express his shock at Spike's calling himself a rebel, Spike called Carl an "idiot" before shooting him with a crossbow and turning Carl into dust.
