"Early One Morning" was an English folk song.
Anne Pratt sang the song to her son William (later the vampire Spike) through his childhood and as an adult. In 2002, the First Evil used this song as a hypnotic trigger to make Spike do its bidding.
The song was first heard when Spike, or more likely, "The First Evil" impersonating Spike, was humming it. Spike overcame his trigger by working out the issues that he had with his dead mother.
Only the first verse and chorus were ever heard, the lyrics of which were as follows:
Early one morning,
Just as the sun was rising,
I heard a maid sing,
In the valley below.
Oh, don't deceive me,
Oh, never leave me,
How could you use
A poor maiden so?
