Angelwings

Over There is the first issue of the Blood & Trenches comic book miniseries. Written and illustrated by John Byrne, it was originally published on March 11, 2009, by IDW Publishing.

Synopsis[]

In Europe, war ravages nations, but a greater darkness than human conflict calls Angel back across the ocean from his distant home in America — bodies of combatants found drained of blood, and signs of an ancient evil once more abroad in the world. Writer/artist John Byrne tells an untold tale of Angel's WWI exploits![1]

Summary[]

During World War I, Angel drives an ambulance with wounded soldiers when he was attacked by a German airplane. The ambulance is destroyed and the soldiers die, but Angel survives.

Six weeks earlier, Angel is living in the streets of New York City. He reads in a newspaper of German forces having been drained of their blood and a mysterious symbol found at the scene each time. Angel breaks into a public library to research the mark and finds it belongs to a vampire. In five days, he hitches a ride from Canada on a transatlantic boat. However, the boat is shot down by a U-boat. While the passengers are in the water, the German soldiers shoot at them. Unbeknownst to them, Angel sneaks onboard their submarine.

Two days later, the submarine arrives on the French coast, and Angel escapes. He walks onto a road, though he is hit by a British army truck. The soldiers, believing Angel dead, put him in the trunk of the van and drive to the hospital. There, Angel come to just as they show him to the nurse, Lady Margaret d'Ascoyne, who takes Angel in. While Margaret patches Angel up, the soldiers report to their sergeant about Angel's strange recovery.

Later, while Margaret and Angel are making small talk, two vampires jump through a window and attack them, looking for blood. Angel stakes them both and reveals enough to Margaret to make her understand what he did. To help him blend in, she gives him a job as an ambulance driver.

Some time later, three officers arrive in the area, questioning soldiers about Angel. When they gather enough intel, they set out to capture Angel, who was just attacked by the plane. After escaping the wreckage of the ambulance, Angel finds himself wanting to feed on the dead soldiers. The officers arrive and catch Angel by surprise, capturing and knocking him out.

The men, led by Colonel Geoffrey Wyndam-Pryce, bring Angel to the hospital and start questioning him on the operating theater with Margaret present. She recognizes him, which rouses suspicion in Geoffrey. He has all the patients and staff gathered in the room. He explains that vampires have been fighting on the side of the Germans and he wants to find out if any of them are. He then opens the curtains, knowing any vampires present will burst into flames.
