Cassandra Rayne was an ancestor of Ethan Rayne and a Champion of the Powers That Be that fought the First Evil.
Before the First killed her and hid her body parts in Sunnydale, Cassandra placed Hope's Dagger (the only weapon that can hurt the First) in The First's lair, a castle in its own hell dimension. Cassandra guided Buffy Summers to the castle where only a champion could enter. She transferred her essence and spirit after Buffy's victory over the first to her descendant Ethan Rayne claiming that she has touched the purest light in creation hoping that her touch will bring some decency in him.
