Howard was a human working at Wolfram & Hart as a security guard. He was stationed at a security center, monitoring security cameras, alongside a vampire detector. When Lindsey McDonald and Angel conspired so the latter could infiltrate the firm's premises, Howard altered the building's security guards of the presence of a vampire. As W&H vampire detectors were unable to sense the number of vampires present, the guards believed the alarm came from the vampire dropped on the W&H lobby by Charles Gunn and his crew.
