A book accompanied the mystical shadow casters narrating the origin story of the First Slayer, Sineya. These items were part of the Slayer Emergency Kit, which Robin Wood inherited from his mother Nikki and eventually passed on to Buffy Summers.[1]

The manual's text was in Sumerian, which Dawn Summers translated initially. However, once the shadow casters were set, the text from one page transformed from Greek letters into English. The instructions warned whoever was assembling the casters that they could not just be shown nor could just watch, but they must see. This message meant that the person had to see the story for themselves, but only if they were willing to make an exchange.[1]

As Buffy and her friends found out for themselves, reading the manual's text in conjunction with the setting of the shadow casters demonstrated the origin of the First Slayer, then created a portal that enabled one to encounter the Shadowmen. However, while the person would be transported by the portal to the Shadowmen's domains, a demon would be unleashed in their place.[1]
