Jared was a student at California Physics Institute.
During Winifred Burkle's seminar, he was the only audience member who did not flee the auditorium when a portal appeared above Fred. Instead, he grabbed a camera and took pictures. Later, Charles Gunn and Angel confronted him about the incident at a comic book store where he worked and he revealed that he had identified Fred as one of the students that disappeared over the years, as a result of Professor Seidel.
Jared apparently knew about Angel - who had become an ersatz urban legend - through the chat rooms, much to Angel's amusement. He asked if he could possibly become their intern, only for Gunn to (sarcastically) reply that they were stocked up on interns, although the decoder ring was in the mail.
