Mike Helgenberg was a Sunnydale High student and the best friend of Cassie Newton.

Mike kept asking Cassie to the Winter Formal dance with him but she continually turned him down. Buffy suspected him of wanting to kill Cassie because of her numerous refusals or presumably a need for revenge against Cassie. When Cassie is talking to Buffy and Xander about the things she wants to do in life she mentions wanting to attend the Winter Formal with the boy she likes; she is most likely talking about Mike. Instead, much to Buffy's surprise, Mike wanted to invite Buffy's little sister, Dawn, since Cassie wouldn't go with him.
